Berlin
Berlin, of all the cities I travel to find art, is the hardest. The city is large, the language is foreign, and the food is cheap. Razor sharp, omnipresent and a way of life for Berliners, the graffiti scene in Berlin is like nothing else the world has to offer. Doors, dumpsters, parks, ping pong tables, cars, bathrooms, you name it and you’ll find graffiti on it. Art is free in Berlin, out in the open for everyone to absorb or ignore.
Each neighborhood has its own story. Kreuzberg which lied west of The Wall, known for both punk rock and the infamous Doner Kebab, is undoubtedly the epicenter of street graffiti in Berlin. Prenzlauer Berg, deep in the heart of the former East Berlin gives an insightful look on what life was like under the “Iron Curtain.” Over 300 buildings in Prenzlauer Berg are protected as historic, it’s now one of the sought out places to live in Berlin.
